Westman Islands
After taking a coach transfer from Reykjavík to Landeyjar (approx 2hrs) to Bakkafjara pier your group will take the ferry (approx. 40 min trip each way) to the only inhabited island, Heimaey. The Westman Islands are a group of some 15 islands and 30 skerries about 10 km off the south coast of Iceland. When you arrive in Heimaey a guide will take you on a sightseeing trip around Heimaey Island. The only inhabited island is Heimaey where in 1973 a great volcanic eruption nearly destroyed the town. Other sights include the volcanic crater, Eldfell, as well as puffins and ruins of old homes and other buildings destroyed by volcanic eruptions. You will take a return boat trip back in the afternoon, and drive back to Reykjavík.
Add-ons possible:
Add a trip to the ldheimar Volcano Museum which explores the 1973 eruption covering Heimaey, arguably Iceland's biggest natural disaster.
