Housesteads Roman Fort (Hexham)
Along the Hexham area of Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland is Vercovicium the Housesteads Roman Fort. This area is the best-preserved example of a Roman Fort in the country and offers itself as the perfect place for your students to put textbook learning into practice, bringing history to life before their eyes. Amongst the elements to discover are the remains of a Roman hospital, barrack blocks and most surprisingly, fully plumbed Roman toilets! As well as the physical remains a plenty your students can also learn more about the site using interactive elements which highlights ranges of Roman objects likely to have been common place here during its height as well as a cinema which transports them back in time to witness how this area has changed between then and now.
