Situated on the Amstel River in Amsterdam and originally opened in 1682 as a retirement home for elderly women, The Hermitage Amsterdam is a satellite branch of one of the largest and most renowned museums in the world, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The museum holds two permanent presentations, one about the Netherlands–Russia relations and the other about the history of the building Amstelhof. The rest of the museum is home to temporary exhibitions.
