Krakow's Museum of Contemporary Art opens in former Schindler factory

Through the initiative of Mayor Jacek Majchrowski, school trips to Krakow have become even more interesting as Oscar Schindler’s Krakow factory is taking on a new mission. The factory is to become Krakow’s premier contemporary art museum opening up an important chapter in the cultural life of the city .Located on the site of Oskar Schindler’s former factory in Zablocie, a post-industrialist area of Krakow, it is one of the country’s most significant investments in the arts in recent years.

Financed by the Polish ministry of culture and the European Union, the museum cost €25 million ($36 million) and has over 100,000 square feet of exhibition space incorporating the lion's share of what was once the enamel factory of Oskar Schindler, the German entrepreneur universally known due to Stephen Spielberg's World War II film, Schindler's List.

The museum is part of an on-going programme of regeneration for Krakow's former industrial district of Zablocie. Last summer, the city launched a state-of-the-art museum in what had been the administrative offices of the Schindler factory, chronicling the 5 year Nazi occupation of Krakow during World War II.
