5 of the Spookiest School Trips Destinations

Halloween has come a long way since the Celtic festival of Samhain, which included divination, feasts and ritual bonfires. Now, the spookiest night of the year and its (American) trappings have become a staple in modern Britain. Love it or loathe it, Halloween is very much here to stay on the British cultural calendar.

So, if you’re not feeling the Halloween spirit just yet, we here at Adaptable Travel are proud to present a selection of our spookiest school trips currently on offer that you can start to plan and plot for your students.

1. London

There’s no shortage of places in London that you can go to have an authentically spooky experience. With a number of ghosts said to haunt its grounds including Thomas Beckett and Edward V, the Tower of London has an especially gruesome history of imprisonment and suffering.

Following on with the prison theme, we also offer a school trip to the Clink Prison Museum, based on the site of the old Clink Prison, which is thought be England’s oldest prison. Students will have the opportunity to handle original artefacts, including torture devices, as well as getting the chance to view and hear the amazing stories of the inmates.

2. Berlin

If you’re looking for something a little more science based but still pretty scary and creepy in its own right, look no further than a Languages school trip to the MEMU Museum of Man in Berlin. Delving into the structure of the human body including muscles and the skeleton, the museum is one of the most visited private museums in Germany. A must see for any school trip to Berlin!

3. Venice

Home of magnificent architecture, fantastic food and soaring bell towers, Venice is a glorious city with a dark past. One school trip available in Venice is to the Doge’s Palace where students will have the opportunity to visit locations such as the Chamber of the Great Council and The Courtrooms.

Here, there is also the opportunity to visit the secret rooms where altogether darker activities occurred… Students will be able to visit the prisons cells where the famous seducer Casanova escaped from and the torture room which the Venetians used to extract confessions out of the prisoners by way of a hanging noose.

4. Paris

Paris is a city where on one particular street you can still see evidence of where the old guillotine dubbed ‘The Widow’ used to stand. One of the spookiest tours that we have on offer at Adaptable Travel is a Languages school trip to the Paris Catacombs.

The Catacombs hold the remains of approximately 6 million people, many of which are held in the ossuary. However, the tunnels extend for over 200 miles and not all of them have been completely mapped with authorities having very little idea on what’s actually down there. Students will have the opportunity to explore sections of the Catacombs and hear the gruesome history behind them.

5. Stratford upon Avon

Stratford upon Avon probably isn’t the first place that you think of when you think of Halloween. However, there have been plenty of spooky and dreadful goings on in the town over the years. As the site of a number of battles over the years, Warwick Castle has certainly been the site of many gruesome events, making a visit to the dungeons an absolute must.

Here at Adaptable Travel, we also provide school trips to Tudor World as part of the English Curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to journey back in time to the 16th century and if you’re feeling particularly brave, experience an especially eerie ghost tour by night which is not for the faint hearted!

We hope that the above trips have given you a flavour of the wide variety of spooky school trips that Adaptable Travel provide, with locations that offer a dark past that might not be all that well known. Happy Halloween!
