Prague – Sun, Spires & Surprise
Arriving early in the morning, we were unexpectedly greeted by Czech early morning sunshine. After looking at the public transport map, we quickly found our route, taking bus then metro to our hotel in less than 30 minutes.
We easily found our hotel, the Botel Admiral, a charming hotel located on a permanently moored boat on the Vltava River, only about 15minutes walk from the Old Town. A novel place to stay, but also clean, modern and surprisingly spacious, with wonderful views over the river.
Our first port of call was the Petrin Hill, the highest hill overlooking Prague. A maze of paths lead up the hill, winding through rose gardens, waterfalls, ancient trees and leading to the pinnacle of the hill, where an Eiffel Tower replica is located, one third of the size of the real Eiffel Tower. After an ice cream, the climb to the top offered unrivalled views over this beautiful city, looking over the castle district, Old Town, Charles Bridge and the whole of the city with its’ red roofs. This only made us more excited to explore this chocolate box city that was spread out below. Petrin Hill is a great place to relax and highly recommended for an alternative view of the city.
We then walked to the Old Town, the epicentre of tourism in Prague and a must see. Crooked buildings, winding cobbled streets, church spires peering over buildings and strong aromas of Czech food. A great place and best explored on foot, but remember to taker a map if you want to get out. We also strolled over to the famous Charles Bridge, and took a boat ride along the Vltava River offering another, more relaxing way to see this famed city.
Prague was so diverse, from the hustle and bustle of the Old Town and Jewish Quarter to the serenity of Petrin Hill. There are shops selling everything you could imagine from souvenirs to chic fashion style. And the cuisine is a treat, with a wide variety now on offer catering for the ever increasing numbers of tourists. I have wanted to visit Prague for many years, and I was not disappointed on this, my first visit.
