For a college trip with great educational value the WWI battlefields of Ypres and The Somme are ideal college trip destinations for pupils looking to gain an understanding of the events of 1914-1918, and experience the conditions of soldiers in trenches.

The impact and significance of World War 1 is the foundation of most modern history courses and our First World War school trips are a great way for pupils to experience first-hand what they are being taught in the classroom by taking learning outside the classroom.Subject focus:• KS 3-5: Show the conditions of the soldiers in the trenches of World War I• KS 3-5: Examine the effects of historical trends and events on ordinary people• KS 3-5: Understand how people respond to traumatic events• KS 3-5: Recognise the role of World War I in influencing later events Battlefield trips also offer a great MFL opportunity too, offering language immersion.

Suggested Itinerary

ARRIVAL DAY & YPRES: Travel from your school to Ypres on full executive coach (via channel crossing by Eurotunnel or Ferry to Calais). After arriving in Ypres, you will visit the following battlefield sites including Hill 60, Caterpillar Mine, Hooge Crater and Essex Farm Cemetery. Afterwards you will head onto your accommodation and check in, followed by evening meal. You may choose to visit the Menin Gate for the Last Post Ceremony.

Depart UK early morning by coach and ferry Arrive in Ypres for a guided tour of the battlefield sites (Menin Gate, Essex Farm, Tyne Cot Cemetary) rounded off with a visit to Hill 60 and Sanctuary Wood Museum Early evening visit to the Menin Gate for the Last Post Ceremony Arrive at your accommodation

YPRES CONTINUED AND RETURN HOME: After breakfast, check out. Morning visit to two significant cemeteries, Langemark German Cemetery and the Tyne Cot Commonwealth Cemetery. This is followed by an afternoon trip to the excellent Passchendaele Museum. If there is scope for a later channel crossing home, you may be able to also visit Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. Then make your return journey home.
